Milk Lamp

When I went to the Antique festival this weekend I found a great old milk bottle.  I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I saw it.

I went to Lowes and bought a light kit, a glass bit.

After about 30 minutes of drilling, sweating and freaking out.  I finally got the hole in the back of the bottle and ran the wire and wired up the rest of the lamp.  A few things of note here when you are drilling the glass take it nice and slow and use plenty of water while drilling.  This lubricates the bit and allows you to drill cleanly, make sure to use a low rpm on the drill so that you don’t over heat the glass and crack it.

We have not totally decided about the Styrofoam in the bottle.  We are going to give it a few days to see if we want to stay with that or find something else to fill the bottle with, maybe some bottle caps or something similar.

I think I might go back to the next show and pick up another one of these and use them for our nightstands in the bedroom.  We will see what happens.

Have a Great Day!

  1. That is very cool. I know a woman who had some lights made from the small milk bottles that used to get deliverd. They had long cords and hung from the ceiling. I think she paid $1200 for the set of 6.

  2. HOLY COW.. I'll make those all day long for $1200 a set. This was fun to make. Different from woodworking but still fun. Very nerve racking but still fun. I think I will probably make some more. Who knows maybe I can sell a few.

  9. Thanks Chelsea and Candace.

I kind of skimmed over it but make sure you use a glass drilling bit to drill into the glass. It is much different than a normal drill bit.

  11. Your lamp is awesome. You could also put white sand in it to make it look like fresh milk. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Cedar Junction: White Sand is an option. We got some river rock to try out last night just trying several different looks to see what looks good. It is going to be one HEAVY lamp once I do figure it out. I am going to be making at least one more of these. They are going to be our nightstand lamps should look good next to the Farm house bed I am going to build.

  17. Oh wow. I love that lamp. What a fun idea. Maybe it will help me think outside the box while am trying to come up with an idea for my back porch light.

  18. Thanks Tracy... Good luck with the back porch lamp. I have seen mason jar lights that hang as well as some of the smaller milk bottles used as lights. I saw this at the Antique show and knew exactly what it needed to be. I love it when that happens. :)
